osCommerce Optimization Roadblocks |
 |
|
 |
The optimization of an oscommerce site like any other site can be a
challenge. In our The Importance of a Search Engine Friendly Oscommerce Site article, we
touched a bit upon a few things that could prevent your oscommerce
site from being properly indexed. While much of the information in
this article, applies to any site, this article will treat the
information presented as if it is specifically related to
oscommerce optimization.
When designing your oscommerce site or choosing an existing design,
you should always be aware of the need to opimize you site and be
aware of the technologies that may present roadblocks to achieving
your goals.
Oscommerce Optimization and Flash
There's no doubt that there a some sites that use flash are are
nicely done and very visually appealing. However, when it comes to
optimization, flash presents problems.
You probably already know
that search engines crawl your site's text content and uses that
information to index your site in the search engine's results pages.
Herein lies the problem with using flash. All the important information
about your site such as links and link text, content and even the image alt tags are
embedded in the flash file. Consequently, using a flash would
prevent the search engines from indexing the information that it
needs to properly categorize your oscommerce site.
If you must or insist on using flash, use it sparingly and in a way
so as not to include your site's links and important content.
Oscommerce Optimization and Frames
Does anyone still use frames? This wouldn't normally be an issue
with an oscommerce site however it's worth mentioning. Just don't
do it!
Oscommerce Optimization and Graphic Designs
There are a lot of good site designers and designs floating around
the internet. Unfortunately, a lot of those don't take into
consideration the need to optimize your oscommerce site. Using a
design that leaves your home page without any text, whether links or
content, isn't really any different than using a flash site. If
your site's important information is contained in those attractive files, you
aren't giving the search engines much to index.
If your oscommerce site's home page must be graphical, consider
adding text links and a little content about your products or services
at the end of the graphics portion of the page.
The optimization of your oscommerce site is an important factor in ranking
well in the search engines. Following the guidelines in this article will help
make your osCommerce optimization tasks a lot easier.
